Straps for Tissot: the right leather for each case, lug width by lug width

Your Tissot has a specific lug width: 18, 19, 20 or 22 mm, depending on whether it's a PR 100, a Heritage or a Seastar. Before the leather itself, it's that measurement that determines whether a strap fits properly or strains the attachment points. Our atelier maintains an archive of 1891 Tissot references: we know which family carries which lug width, and which case needs a slightly curved strap to avoid gaps at the sides.

Lug width, case, and leather: what actually differs across Tissot families

Tissot doesn't use a single lug width, and the numbers show it. The 20 mm covers 584 models in our archive, almost always sport cases like the PR 100 (147 references) or the Seastar (93): wide cases, thick bezels, a strap that needs substance to not disappear under the wrist. The 22 mm, with 248 models, returns on Seastar and some larger Heritage diameters. Below that, the 19 mm (156 models) and 18 mm (150) are the measure of Carson (139 references) and Couturier (75): more restrained cases, narrow lugs, where a thick strap ends up covering too much of the case flank.

The leather changes with the model's purpose, and not by chance. On the Heritage, which plays on vintage aesthetics, calf (76 available) ages well: it softens, takes the shape of your wrist, darkens slightly at the edges without cracking if kept away from water. On the Couturier, designed for more formal wear, alligator (38 available) holds its structure even after years, while calf there deteriorates sooner. On Everytime and Seastar, where daily wear is different, suede (19) and nylon (82) handle repeated friction from the strap keeper better.

The attachment is the last detail almost nobody notices until they get the strap wrong. The curved lugs of many Heritage models want a curved strap end to match, otherwise two millimeters of light remain visible underneath. The straight lugs of Touch and T-Trend, meanwhile, accept a more squared seam without issue. It's not an aesthetic difference: it's why two Tissot models with the same nominal lug width can need two different leather cuts.

How do I find the exact strap size for my Tissot?

The size is the distance between the two lugs, where the strap attaches: it's often printed on the caseback or in the model's manual. In our archive, the most common sizes are 20 mm (584 models, typical of PR 100 and Seastar), 22 mm (248 models), 16 mm (185), 19 mm (156), 18 mm (150) and 21 mm (143). If you're unsure, send us the model name: with 1891 Tissot references catalogued, we can almost always confirm the size without you having to disassemble anything.

What leathers do you have for a Tissot Heritage?

For the Heritage line, which has 100 references in our archive, we work mainly with calf, alligator and suede. Calf (76 leathers available) is the most balanced choice: it suits the vintage character of the model and ages with a natural patina. Alligator (38 available) elevates things for the more formal versions of the line. Suede (19) works well on smaller-cased models, where you need a lightweight strap that doesn't weigh down the wrist.

Is a handcrafted strap better than the original Tissot strap?

It's not a question of better or worse, but of fit and material. The original strap is designed to work across the entire line, not on your specific watch. Working across 1891 Tissot references, we choose the leather, color, and lug cut based on your exact model, not a production average. This changes how the strap sits on the case and how it ages over time—something a generic strap rarely does as well.

How long does it take to get a custom strap for my Tissot?

It depends on the leather you choose and the work required, so we prefer to give an exact answer once you tell us your exact model. Generally, the most common leathers like calf and nylon have shorter lead times than special leathers like lizard or ostrich, which are available in limited quantities. If you have a specific occasion in mind, let us know: we'll arrange production accordingly.

Can I see the strap on my Tissot before choosing it?

Yes, at our atelier in Milan, Via XX Settembre 15, by appointment only. Bring your watch, and we'll try different leathers and colors directly on your case in natural light—which shows the color differently than any photograph. It's the most direct way to understand how a leather behaves on your specific model's curves, whether it's a Carson, a Seastar, or a Heritage.

What's the difference between a 20 mm and a 22 mm strap for Tissot?

They are two different, non-interchangeable lug widths: the strap must match exactly the distance between your case's lugs. The 20 mm is the most common size in our Tissot archive, with 584 compatible models, typical of PR 100 and Seastar. The 22 mm, with 248 models, appears on some Seastar and larger Heritage diameters. A 22 mm strap on 20 mm lugs simply won't fit, or will force in and damage the lugs: this is why we always confirm the size before working the leather.
