MILANO STRAPS · ALLIGATOR

Louisiana alligator. Scales that last twenty years.

Mississippi alligator skin has symmetrical scales instantly recognizable. It flexes without yielding. It develops a sheen over time, it does not lose it.

American Alligator (Alligator mississippiensis), farmed in Louisiana, vegetable tanned, CITES Appendix II certified. Symmetrical scales, compact structure. Resists humidity better than niloticus crocodile. Available in 18, 19, 20, 21, 22mm. From €150.

Develops a natural golden patina with use. On 18-20mm it bends without cracking. Lasts twenty years with minimal care. My preferred pairing: cognac with a steel buckle on a Datejust.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between alligator and crocodile for a watch strap?

Alligator scales are more uniform and smaller, arranged in a regular grid pattern. Crocodile scales are larger, more irregular, and feature pronounced ridges and osteoderms (bony plates). Alligator leather is smoother and more refined; crocodile is textured and bolder. Both are durable, but the aesthetic and tactile experience differ significantly.

How do you care for an alligator leather strap?

Alligator is naturally water-resistant due to its structure, but avoid prolonged exposure to moisture. Clean gently with a soft, dry cloth. Use a dedicated leather conditioner sparingly—every 6–12 months depending on wear. Avoid direct sunlight and extreme temperature swings. Store in a cool, dry place. Never use harsh chemicals or oil-based products.

What sizes are available for Milano Straps alligator straps?

We offer lug widths from 18 mm to 24 mm in standard increments. Lengths are customizable to fit most wrist sizes (typically 75–125 mm for the short end, 115–140 mm for the long end). Contact us for specific combinations or bespoke requests.

Why are alligator scales more regular than crocodile scales?

Alligator scales develop in a more uniform geometric pattern due to the species' skeletal structure and growth mechanics. Crocodile scales are influenced by osteoderm placement and grow more irregularly. This anatomical difference is inherent to each species and visible in the finished leather.

What is alligator leather and where does it come from?

Alligator leather comes from the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis), primarily sourced from Louisiana's regulated farms and wild harvesting programs. The belly skin—where scales are finest and most uniform—is tanned and finished for watch straps. It's prized for its refined texture, durability, and natural water-shedding properties.

Can I order a custom alligator strap from the atelier?

Yes. We offer full bespoke services: custom lug widths, lengths, finishes, and hardware. Contact us directly with your watch specifications and preferences. Lead time typically ranges from 4–8 weeks depending on complexity and current workload.

How long does an alligator strap last with daily wear?

With proper care, an alligator strap lasts 5–10 years of daily use, often longer. Durability depends on climate (humidity and heat accelerate aging), frequency of wear, and maintenance. The stitching and hardware may need attention before the leather itself degrades significantly.

Which watches pair best with an alligator strap?

Alligator suits dress and sport watches equally well. It elevates refined dress pieces (dress codes, business) and adds sophistication to tool watches and sports models. The refined scale pattern works across vintage and contemporary designs. Match the strap finish to the watch's bezel and case material for cohesion.
