Cordovan begins with a selection, before it ever becomes a tannage. The shell is a fibrous layer found only in a limited area of the horse’s hindquarters — roughly 30×15 cm per animal. Few hides yield it, and that little requires six months of vegetable tanning before it becomes workable. This explains the price, and explains why it behaves differently from any other leather.
It is not leather in the ordinary sense. It is a compact fibre, almost mineral in its response to time. It does not scratch: it flexes. When a mark forms, the pressure of a thumb is enough to make it disappear — the fibres realign on their own. It is the most wear-resistant material I have worked with: I have cordovan straps that have been in use for ten years and show two.
This strap is made from Shell Cordovan Horween, the Chicago tannery that has worked this leather with methods unchanged for over a century. The colour is cognac — a warmth that, with light and use, deepens further, turning toward dark amber and drawing out that dense sheen which is cordovan’s signature. Not a colour laid on the surface: it is the leather itself maturing. The ecru stitching sits on tone, warm on warm — giving a legible profile without stealing the scene from the colour.
Cordovan does not age. It matures. Every mark of use becomes part of the strap’s character, not a flaw to hide.
Made entirely in Italy. Each piece may show chromatic variations from the images: this is the nature of shell leather, not an imperfection.

Does it scratch?

Is a thickness of 2.9 mm too much for a slim watch?
Cordovan is a dense fiber: at 2.9 mm it has body without feeling heavy. The size is 20 mm at the lugs and 16 at the buckle, length 115 × 75 mm.
I have a watch with lugs different from 20mm. Do you make it?
