From each horse, two oval shells are obtained, roughly 30×15 cm each. All the rest of the hide is not cordovan. And those two pieces, before becoming workable, undergo six months of vegetable tanning. This is where the price comes from, and the way this material behaves over time — different from any other leather.
It is not leather in the ordinary sense. It is a compact fibre, almost mineral in its response to time. It does not scratch: it bends. When a mark forms, the pressure of a thumb is enough to make it disappear — the fibres realign themselves. It is the most wear-resistant material I have worked with: I have cordovan straps that have been in use for ten years and show two.
This strap is made of Shell Cordovan Horween, from the Chicago tannery that has worked this leather with methods unchanged for over a century. The colour is brown — a warmth that darkens and deepens with use, drawing out amber highlights and that dense sheen which is the signature of cordovan. Not a colour laid on the surface: it is the leather itself maturing. The ecru stitching provides a soft contrast — a light thread that traces the line without breaking the warmth of the brown.
Cordovan does not age. It matures. Every mark of wear becomes part of the strap’s character, not a flaw to be hidden.
Made entirely in Italy. Each piece may show colour variations compared to the images: this is the nature of shell leather, not an imperfection.

Does brown darken with use?
Yes. With use it deepens and brings out amber highlights, with the dense sheen typical of cordovan. It’s not a surface dye: it’s the leather maturing.

They give a soft contrast: a light thread that traces the line without breaking the warmth of the brown. A hand stitch is another process altogether: we make it to order in the Casati atelier, in 4–6 weeks, and the details are worked out with me.

This strap exists only in 20mm at the lugs. For another size, we make it to measure in the Casati atelier, in 4–6 weeks, and the details are defined with me.
