Shell Cordovan: The Leather That Doesn't Exist

Shell cordovan is not leather in the conventional sense. It’s a fibrous layer found only in a specific area of a horse’s hindquarters—about 30×15cm per animal. When a mark appears, the pressure of a thumb is enough to make it disappear. The fibres realign themselves.

Shell cordovan is not leather in the conventional sense. It's a fibrous layer from the rear of the horse — roughly 30x15cm per animal — requiring 6 months of vegetable tanning before it's workable. We source it from Horween in Chicago and Shinki Hikaku in Japan.

The surface doesn't scratch; it creases. A mark disappears with thumb pressure — the fibers realign themselves. Available in 20, 22, and 24mm. From 114 Euros.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why doesn't shell cordovan scratch like other leathers?

Because it's not leather in the conventional sense. It's a compact fibrous layer — the shell — with fibers arranged in parallel and extremely tight formation. When subjected to pressure or friction, the fibers bend rather than separate. With your thumb you can make almost every mark disappear. No other leather has this characteristic.

What's the difference between Horween and Shinki cordovan?

I distinguish them by hand. Chicago's Horween has a more matte surface, slightly more visible grain, a feel more rustic in the best sense of the term. Japanese Shinki is more satiny, with an almost mirror-like sheen straight from new. Both last a lifetime — the choice is a matter of taste. For those who love classic dress watches, I prefer Horween. For those who want immediate shine, Shinki.

Which watches do I pair with shell cordovan?

Burgundy or black cordovan on a 36mm Datejust is one of the most elegant watch straps I've built. For a Speedmaster I prefer the tan at 20mm — the contrast with the white dial is sharp. For vintage dress watches, undyed natural cordovan is a choice that never tires. I avoid cordovan on sports or diving watches — it's not its environment.
