Cordovan is not leather. Not in the conventional sense of the word. It's a fibrous tissue extracted from the rear of a horse — the culatta — a compact layer that doesn't exist in any other animal. It is worked differently, polished differently, and ages differently.
The result is a surface that almost appears mineral: uniform, deep, with a natural sheen that doesn't depend on surface treatments but on the very structure of the fiber. The brown of this strap is not a flat color — it shifts, warms in the light, and deepens with use.
Where normal leather scratches, cordovan yields but then recovers. Where others lose thickness, it maintains its shape. Flexibility is not weakness: it is the most surprising characteristic of a material that seems rigid until you wear it.

cordovan has a compact fibrous structure that makes it far more resistant to scratches than calf or box. Minor surface abrasions tend to close up with gentle rubbing from a soft cloth. It is not indestructible, but it responds to the passage of time better than nearly any other leather.
2.9mm is a contained thickness for cordovan, which works best on watches with tall lugs or medium-thickness cases. On dress watches with a slim profile it adapts without difficulty. On sports watches with narrow lugs compatibility must be verified case by case.
The shine of cordovan is structural, not superficial: it depends on fiber orientation, not waxes or treatments. With use it deepens. To maintain it, periodic polishing with a dry cloth is sufficient. Avoid oil-based products that can alter the color and excessively soften the fiber.
cordovan comes from a limited area of the horse’s back, and each hide has its own history. Shade variations between one specimen and another do exist—the brown can tend toward tobacco, dark chocolate, warm cognac. These are not manufacturing defects, but rather the nature of a raw material that does not standardize like a synthetic fabric.
