Yes, that is exactly why it was chosen. Epsom leather has an embossed grain that makes it particularly resistant to knocks, surface scratches and moisture. It copes well with the pressure of a full suitcase without deforming, keeping the structure of the case intact.
Are the colour variations between one piece and another significant or barely noticeable?
It depends on the leather. Epsom is a leather treated with an embossed grain, so tonal variations are generally limited compared with a full-grain leather.
