But how does this Novonappa age? I mean, does the black stay black or does it tend to fade like some more delicate leathers?
Novonappa is a technical, compact leather, designed to withstand daily use without giving way. It is not a leather that develops a visible patina like shell cordovan or certain vegetable-tanned leathers — the black keeps its character. Variations in shade from one piece to another are intrinsic to the nature of the leather, so what you see on arrival is what you will have years from now. Do not expect dramatic transformations: Novonappa ages discreetly.
That reduction in thickness from 4mm to 2.5mm — does it actually serve a purpose, or is it just for a cleaner look under the case?
It serves a concrete purpose. When the strap tapers under the case of the Pilot, a uniform thickness would create a ridge that disturbs the watch's position on the wrist. Tapering towards the buckle, the strap sits flat, as a well-built military strap should. It's not cosmetic — it's pure mechanics.
I have a Pilot but I'm not sure exactly whether the lugs are 22. How can I be certain this strap fits mine?

Why Novonappa specifically, and not a 'nobler' leather like Horween or Shinki? I keep hearing they're better.
Because an IWC Pilot doesn't ask for nobility — it asks for reliability. Novonappa for this strap is a deliberate choice: it's compact, technical, historically created for military straps. It doesn't fear water, heavy use, or changes in temperature. Horween and Shinki are superb, but they have a different calling — more narrative, less functional. Here, form follows function, as it should.
Is the stitching really done by hand? With a strap this wide, wouldn't a machine be faster?
Yes, it is hand-stitched. It's not a romantic claim — it's a matter of control. When stitching by hand the proportions of a 22mm strap that tapers to 20mm, one can adjust the tension, check that the strap fits perfectly between the lugs, that there's no uneven tension. A machine would be quicker, but it wouldn't give this millimetre precision. On the Pilot, the millimetre matters.
