In our archive we have catalogued 1143 Hamilton models, so we know at once what size and what lug fitting yours requires, before you even ask.

Jazzmaster and Khaki: two approaches to the wrist

Hamilton brings together two sensibilities that rarely coexist elsewhere. The Jazzmaster, 350 references catalogued, is the formal line: thin cases, narrow lugs, a strap that should support the case without weighing it down. The Khaki models—Field with 221 references, Aviation with 196, Navy with 105—come from military watches: robust cases, wider lugs, full-grain leather or nylon, not thin dress calf.

Lug width varies significantly across families. The 20mm is standard on 489 catalogued models, mostly Khaki Field and automatic Jazzmaster. The 22mm, 349 models, is typical of Aviation and Navy with larger diameters. Below 20mm you enter vintage territory: 18mm on 104 models, often American Classic or vintage Jazzmaster, where a narrow lug calls for a strap that follows the wrist curve without gaps at the sides.

Leather ages differently depending on where it goes. On a Khaki Field, nylon or suede develops patina quickly. On a Jazzmaster or Intra-Matic, full-grain calf or cordovan darken slowly, holding the shine the case demands. On the Ventura, just 46 references in our archive, the attachment is often non-standard: size needs to be verified case by case, not by family.

What size strap does my Hamilton need?

It depends on the model. On Khaki Field and many automatic Jazzmaster watches, the most common size is 20mm, found on 489 of the 1143 Hamilton models in our archive. Khaki Aviation and Navy often take 22mm, which accounts for 349 models. Earlier models, like American Classic and vintage Jazzmaster, go down to 18mm, 104 models, or even 14mm, 32 models. If you send us the exact model, we'll tell you the size without you having to measure.

What leathers do you have for Hamilton?

We work with nine leathers in this collection: nylon (82 references), calf (76), alligator (38), saffiano (28), suede (19), cordovan (11), lizard (8), stingray (4) and ostrich (2). Nylon suits field Khaki well, calf and cordovan work for formal Jazzmaster and Intra-Matic. Exotics like alligator and lizard fit more formal dress watches.

Will a strap work on a vintage Hamilton?

Yes, if the lug width matches. Our archive covers models from 14mm to 24mm lugs, including less common sizes like 16mm, 19 models, and 21mm, 41 models, typical of certain vintage Railroad and Khaki watches. On a vintage piece it's worth checking the lug thickness and attachment type—spring bar or fixed—as well. We'll explain this at the atelier or by email before going ahead.

How long does it take to get a strap ready?

Timing depends on the leather and work involved. Simple leathers like nylon or calf are usually ready sooner. Exotics like alligator or lizard require longer hand-stitching work. At the atelier we can give you a precise timeframe once you choose the model and leather, because each combination has its own rhythm.

Can I see Hamilton straps at the atelier before choosing?

Yes, by appointment at Via XX Settembre 15 in Milan. You can see and feel the leathers, from nylon to cordovan through exotics like alligator and ostrich, and try them on your watch before deciding. It's the best way to understand how a leather will age on that particular case.

What's the difference between a Jazzmaster strap and a Khaki Field strap?

The difference lies in the lug width and case character. The Jazzmaster, 350 references catalogued, often has thin cases and narrow lugs: it calls for calf or cordovan straps, restrained in thickness. The Khaki Field, 221 references, has more robust field cases and wider lugs, often 20mm: here nylon and suede follow daily wear better and age alongside the watch.
