Straps for Rolex Submariner — the diver returning from the deep

For the Submariner it is the lug width that matters, not the brand. The historic models take 20 mm, the more recent ones 21 mm: check first which lug width yours has, then choose the leather. The correct lug width is verified in Milano Straps's watch archive.

The Submariner changes size, not identity

If your Submariner is older than the 126610 (reference 16610, 14060, 116610LN, etc.), the lug width is 20mm. From the 126610 onwards (Submariner Date 2020, 126613, 126619LB), Rolex switched to 21mm. This is a detail many only discover by trying on the wrong strap. For a sporty wrist: Horween shell cordovan that ages with wear, Hornback alligator for character. For true diving: organic rubber, link at the bottom. For everyday use: swift calfskin or polished Italian leather.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my Submariner is 20mm or 21mm?

I take a ruler or a calliper and measure between the two lugs, where the strap fits. The Submariner before 2020 fits 20mm. The 126610 model, from 2020 onwards, fits 21mm.

What's the difference between alligator, cordovan and Italian leather?

Alligator has a scaled grain, fine and regular. Cordovan is compact, with a surface that polishes with use. Italian leather has a softer grain, suited to daily use.

Can I fit the strap myself on my Submariner?

Yes, a spring bar tool is all you need. I slide the bar out from one side, remove the old strap and insert the new one the same way round. The operation takes just a few minutes.

How do I keep the strap in good condition over time?

I clean the leather with a dry cloth after use. I keep the strap away from water and perfume, which damage the surface and the stitching over time.
