Perlage is a cold finishing technique applied to the flat surfaces of plates and bridges: a cylindrical or spherical tool, loaded with abrasive powder, is pressed and rotated at a precise point, leaving a micro-concave circle. The operator then moves the tool by a few tenths of a millimeter and repeats. The result is a dense grid of overlapping circles that diffuse light in a satin, uniform manner. Unlike Côtes de Genève, which work directionally, perlage works through accumulation of impressions: there is no dominant line, the eye finds no preferred direction.
On quality movements, perlage almost always covers areas of the plate that are not directly visible when the movement is mounted — the surfaces facing the dial, not the caseback. There its function is also practical: it traps debris and particles before they reach the pivots. On skeletonized movements or those with a sapphire caseback, the finishing is instead extended to exposed surfaces, where the quality of execution becomes immediately readable. Well-executed perlage has circles of constant diameter, regular spacing, and uniform depth across the entire surface; one done hastily reveals irregularities already at 10× magnification.
The technique is often combined with other finishes: on the same movement it is normal to find Côtes de Genève on the main bridges, perlage on intermediate plates, anglage on edges, and colimaçon on barrel wheels. Pietari Kupias uses it on the Katedraali together with black polishing and straight graining on satin-finished and hand-beveled German silver bridges. Armin Strom combines it in the ASB19 caliber with circular Côtes de Genève and blued screws. Jaeger-LeCoultre in the Master Grande Tradition Tourbillon Jumping Date movement declares ten distinct finishes, perlage included, across over thirty hand-finished components.
The word comes from the French perle, pearl. In Italian it is sometimes called perlatura or perlaggi, but in catalogs and industry price lists it almost always circulates in its original French form. It should not be confused with azuré, which is a wavy pattern applied especially to dials — although some sources use the two terms interchangeably, which I consider imprecise.
