In watchmaking, the term calendar doesn't indicate just one thing: it encompasses a family of complications with very different degrees of automation, and confusing them is the most common mistake I see even experienced collectors make. The basic distinction breaks down into three levels: complete calendar, annual calendar, and perpetual calendar.
The complete calendar (or triple calendar) displays the day of the week, date, and month — often with moon phase — but the mechanism doesn't account for the different lengths of months. It requires correction five times a year, every time a month has fewer than 31 days. It's the simplest version of the three, but still challenging to construct if you want a readable display.
The annual calendar, patented by Patek Philippe, takes a step forward: it automatically distinguishes between 30 and 31-day months. It requires only one correction per year, between late February and early March, because February remains the only month the mechanism can't handle on its own. Rolex developed a similar system — called Saros — in the 9001 caliber of the Sky-Dweller since 2012, with correction needed in March.
The perpetual calendar handles everything: short months, long months, leap years. A well-constructed perpetual — like those from IWC, Patek Philippe, or Vacheron Constantin — requires no correction until 2100, when the Gregorian calendar skips a leap year that most mechanisms don't account for. That skip is the limit of the standard perpetual.
There's then an even rarer variant: the secular perpetual calendar. It integrates the Gregorian rule whereby centennial years are leap years only if divisible by 400 — so 2100, 2200, and 2300 aren't leap years, while 2400 is. IWC solved this problem with a 400-year gear composed of just 8 components, the work of Kurt Klaus. The Portugieser Eternal Calendar will function correctly until 3999 without intervention.
From a construction standpoint, complex perpetual calendars use correctors recessed into the case flanks — pointed pushers — to adjust day, month, and year without pulling the crown, reducing the risk of forcing. The classic European layout positions the day at 9 o'clock, the date at 12 o'clock, the month at 3 o'clock. Patek Philippe with the ref. 5236P instead linearized everything on a horizontal line with four adjacent disks, a solution I find more legible than many traditional displays.
The perpetual calendar is considered one of the three fundamental complications of the grand complication, alongside the chronograph and the minute repeater.
