The minute repeater is the most demanding acoustic complication in mechanical watchmaking, and distinguishing it from its minor variants is not a snobbish collector's detail: it's a matter of understanding what you're paying for and why. When you actuate the lever or lateral pusher, the mechanism reads the position of the time wheels and translates that reading into an acoustic sequence: first the chimes of complete hours, then the quarters elapsed, finally the minutes exceeding the last quarter. If it's 10:47, you'll hear ten single strikes, three double strikes for the quarters, two single strikes for the remaining minutes. All of this happens in real time, without electronic memory, through hammers striking tuned gongs.
The distinction from other chiming mechanisms is clear. The quarter repeater stops at the quarters: it chimes hours and quarters, but not the exact minutes. The petite sonnerie chimes automatically at intervals without any activation. The grande sonnerie does the same but adds the minutes, and strikes on its own every quarter hour: a considerable energy consumption that demands properly sized power reserves. The minute repeater is instead always on demand: it chimes only when activated, and it chimes everything, down to the minute.
The heart of the mechanism is the snail cam rack system: gears with helical profiles that measure hours, quarters and minutes and control the hammers. The more precise the construction, the clearer the sound. Acoustic quality depends on three independent variables: the tuning of the gongs, the thickness and geometry of the case that serves as a sound box, and the weight and travel of the hammers themselves. Genta pushed this concept to the extreme with cases featuring 0.6 mm walls; other makers use sapphire casebacks or integrated acoustic membranes. Jaeger-LeCoultre's patented trébuchet hammers solve the problem of hammer bounce on the gong by improving the purity of the note.
At the bench I've disassembled minute repeaters from the early twentieth century with Koehn movements and contemporary pieces with four-bell Westminster calibers. The constructive logic hasn't changed in a hundred years; what has changed is dimensional tolerance. A repeater that hasn't been hand-tuned, gong by gong, will chime. But it won't sing.
