The parachute is a balance wheel shock absorption system patented by Abraham-Louis Breguet in 1790: one of the few inventions from that era that solved a real problem without ever truly being superseded in principle. Before Breguet, a fall or violent shock would almost always break the balance wheel pivots — extremely fine threads, often less than half a millimeter, that hold the regulating organ in its jewels. The classic parachute replaces rigid bridges with elastically shaped supports in the form of a spring: when a shock arrives, the pivots yield slightly in the direction of the impact and then return to position. The balance wheel survives; without a shock absorber, it almost certainly would not.
From the bench I've seen eighteenth and nineteenth-century watches opened with the original parachute still functioning after two centuries. The geometry of the spring is simple, but calibration is everything: too stiff and it won't absorb, too soft and the balance wheel shifts during normal operation. Breguet found the balance, and those who came after had much to study.
Breguet maintains the system in modern Tradition line calibers, where it's visible to the naked eye and is part of the aesthetic reading of the movement. It's not a decorative homage: the 505Q caliber, for example, mounts a functional parachute derived directly from the eighteenth-century solution.
De Bethune developed the most discussed contemporary version: the triple parachute, patented by the manufacture, replaces the single elastic element with three independent absorption points around the regulating organ. The physical principle remains Breguet's — controlled elastic yielding of the balance wheel supports — but triple redundancy distributes stresses across multiple axes and increases recovery capacity after out-of-plane shocks. You'll find it on calibers like the DB2005, DB2044, and DB2115, depending on the model. It's not a purely aesthetic solution: De Bethune works with titanium and silicon balance wheels, lighter materials but also more fragile to lateral impacts compared to traditional steel, so the enhanced protection has a precise technical reason.
Other makers use similar systems with proprietary names — Incabloc and KIF are the most widespread in the industry — but the parachute remains the historical reference from which everything starts. Those who restore antique watches know that finding an intact Breguet parachute is a stroke of luck: the springs fatigue, deform, and replicating one identically requires a lathe and considerable patience.
