Every watchmaking house that develops its own gold alloy does so for two concrete reasons: to obtain a tone that is unreproducible by the competition and to improve mechanical properties compared to standard 18k gold. It's not marketing: differences in hardness, oxidation resistance, and color stability over time are measurable at the workbench.
The most documented case is Omega's Moonshine Gold, introduced in 2019. It contains gold, silver, copper, and palladium in proportions that reduce the saturation of yellow compared to classic 18k gold and lower the tendency to darken over the long term. It's paler than traditional yellow gold, not paler than white gold: a sober middle ground that on brushed surfaces appears almost discreet. It's part of an Omega proprietary triad alongside Sedna (rose, with copper and palladium) and Canopus (white).
Bronze Gold, used by Omega and Blancpain, is a 9k alloy: 37.5% gold, approximately 50% copper, plus silver, palladium, and gallium. The presence of gold stabilizes the copper and curbs the oxidation that makes traditional bronze difficult to manage in fine watchmaking. The color is a warm rose, less vibrant than 18k rose gold.
Hublot calls its proprietary alloy King Gold: a warmer tone compared to standard 5N gold, obtained by modifying copper proportions. IWC developed Armor Gold, an 18k with superior hardness, designed for screws and structural components subject to mechanical wear. Audemars Piguet introduced Sand Gold in 2024: an 18k alloy with palladium that sits chromatically between rose and white, with variable reflections in light. A. Lange & Söhne uses Honey Gold, a warm gold alloy that among enthusiasts is considered the most successful in the German catalog.
Chroma Gold deserves separate discussion: it is not an alloy in the classical sense, but solid multicolored gold obtained through SPS sintering, where white, yellow, and rose gold powders are atomized and fused into a single homogeneous solid. No plating, no gluing: it's structural.
These alloys must be clearly distinguished from the gilt finish, which is a thin plating or golden varnish applied to dials and indices for vintage effect, and from PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) coating, which deposits an extremely thin layer of gold color on steel without using solid gold. Gilt and PVD are aesthetic solutions; proprietary alloys are metallurgical choices.
