The rotating bezel is a graduated ring mounted around the case that performs measurement or time reference functions independent of the dial. It is not an ornament: it is a tool, and its geometry determines what it can and cannot do.
The fundamental distinction is between external and internal bezel. The external one — the most common — rotates on the lugs and is operated manually with the fingers. The internal one is recessed inside the case, beneath the crystal, and is controlled by a dedicated crown: a system adopted in the compressor and super-compressor watches of the Nineteen Fifties, patented by Ervin Piquerez SA and used by Jaeger-LeCoultre, Hamilton and Longines, later revived by the Seiko Alpinist and various versions of the Longines Legend Diver. The advantage is real: the crown that operates the internal bezel can be screwed down, so no water enters while you adjust the scale.
The second distinction is the direction of rotation. Unidirectional bezels rotate only counterclockwise: if accidentally struck, they shift the reference toward a lower residual time, never higher. For a diver measuring bottom time in minutes, this means the error always goes in the conservative direction. Some versions add a mechanical locking system — aqua-lock or similar — that immobilizes the bezel during the dive. Bidirectional bezels, by contrast, typically carry 24-hour scales for GMT calculation: they must be able to rotate both ways because a time zone can be ahead or behind.
There are also less common configurations. The independent moving marker — like the red anodized aluminum house-shaped pointer on the Enicar Jet Graph Mk III bezel — is a separate indicator that traces a second reference without moving the entire bezel. In military and space applications, the rotating bezel becomes a countdown timer, with a reverse scale that allows counting backward. The compass bezel on the Alpinist, operated by the second crown, carries an orientation scale that does not interfere with the outer bezel.
From the workbench I have seen bezels in anodized aluminum, ceramic, sapphire-brushed aluminum and brushed steel. Aluminum is lightweight and engraves well, but the scale wears: on vintage pieces from the Seventies and Eighties, finding a bezel with legible numerals is already an achievement. Ceramic does not fade but chips; steel resists but reflects. No material is neutral: each choice carries a compromise worth understanding before you buy.
