The rose engine lathe is not a lathe in the common sense: it is a manually controlled engraving machine that transforms a flat metal surface into a sequence of repeated geometries. The difference from mechanized engine turning lies entirely in the hands of the guillocheur. The rosette — the eccentric heart that gives the machine its name — determines the wave profile. Changing the rosette means changing the pattern. Pressing the tool with different force means changing depth. There is no automatic setting: every choice is physical, in real time.
The technique dates back to the sixteenth century, but its entry into fine watchmaking is linked especially to Breguet, who at the end of the eighteenth century applied it systematically to solid silver dials to reduce reflections and make the hours readable even in difficult lighting conditions. Since then, guilloché from the rose engine has remained a position marker: whoever uses it communicates that they have invested hours of craft work on a surface that no CNC milling machine can replicate with the same character.
The most widespread motifs are the grain d'orge (barleycorn), the sunray with rays radiating from the center, the scallop rosette on the perimeter, and the concentric wave pattern. Each pattern requires a specific combination of rosette, rotation speed of the workpiece, and angle of attack of the tool. The grain d'orge, for example, imposes a miniaturization of the scheme that makes it necessary to work under magnification: a 0.2 mm tool on a surface of just a few square centimeters leaves margins of error close to zero.
From my bench I have seen guilloché dials of declared provenance that actually showed patterns too regular, lacking the inevitable microvariations of hand work. That absolute regularity is almost always the signature of CNC milling with a pointed tool. The authentic rose engine always leaves a subtle signature: small differences in pitch, a line here or there that is not perfectly identical to the previous one. It is not a defect. It is the proof.
I do not know with certainty how many guillocheurs currently working on rose engine lathes exist today in Switzerland: the estimates circulating vary greatly. What is certain is that training an operator capable of this work requires years, and the machine itself — in the nineteenth-century historical models still in use — is no longer in production.
