Grand feu enamel is not a finishing technique: it is a vitreous material fired at such high temperatures that it transforms into something chemically different from what it was before entering the kiln. The distinction from petit feu is not stylistic but metallurgical. Grand feu fires between 800 and 900 °C; petit feu drops below that threshold and allows fine details — numerals, indices, decorations — that would burn or blur at high temperature. The two firings are not mutually exclusive: in the Breguet Classique Souscription, the white background is grand feu, the black Arabic numerals are petit feu, applied later onto what the first firing has already vitrified.
The basic enamel recipe has not changed much in five centuries: silica, litharge, potassium, soda. It is ground into fine powder, metallic oxides are added for color — cobalt for blue, copper for green, colloidal gold for certain reds — and applied with brush or spatula onto the metal support, usually copper or silver. Then it is fired. Then it is stoned. Then it is fired again. A smooth white dial requires on average five passes; a deep black can reach thirty, because every imperfection on a dark background is mercilessly visible. The moon disc of the 28MPR by Brodbeck Guillochage in Fleurier requires multiple firings plus hours of manual polishing. This is not rhetoric: it is the actual time the piece spends between workbench and kiln.
The result is ceramic, not varnished. Hardness comparable to glass. Color that does not fade because it is not a pigment in suspension but part of the vitreous structure itself. This is why enameled dials survive intact on eighteenth-century watches while many electroplated finishes from the nineteen-nineties are already compromised.
Variants are numerous. Cloisonné adds gold wires soldered to the support that create compartments — cloisons — each filled with enamel of a different color and fired separately: Patek has used more than twenty meters of gold wire for a table clock. Flinqué applies translucent enamel over a guillochéd background, allowing the engraved pattern to show through in transparency. Fumé uses overlaid translucent layers to create tonal gradations, not color shifts. None of these variants is interchangeable with the others.
The rejection rate is structurally high. Enamel behaves in ways that are not entirely predictable: it can form bubbles, crack during cooling, change tone unexpectedly. Only pieces without defects leave the workshop. This is not a commercial detail — it is why almost no major manufacture produces grand feu in-house, and why specialized laboratories such as Les Emailleurs de la Cité in Geneva or Brodbeck in Fleurier exist as independent suppliers even for top-tier brands.
