Deadbeat seconds are not a luxury complication: they are a technical statement. The seconds hand remains stationary for nearly the entire second, then snaps into exact position. No progressive oscillation, no reading margin: either you're on the marker or you're not. This is why they were born on astronomical observation instruments, not wristwatches.
The circulating terminology is at least three: secondi morti in Italian, deadbeat seconds or jumping seconds in English. Technically they are synonymous, although in some contexts deadbeat emphasizes the hand's blocking between one impulse and the next, while jumping describes the visible gesture of the snap. From the bench, I have never seen a real constructive distinction between the two denominations: the words change, the mechanism is the same.
The engineering problem is this: the escapement delivers energy to the seconds wheel with continuous impulses. To obtain a clean snap, you must accumulate that energy, block it, and release it in an instant. There are at least two consolidated architectures. The first uses a spring and lever system: the spring charges during the arc of the second, the lever holds it, then releases it with a snap. The second, adopted among others by A. Lange & Söhne in the Richard Lange Jumping Seconds, uses a five-pointed star and a rod called a flirt: the star rotates every five seconds, the vertices block and release the flirt, which drags the hand onto the next marker. This solution is often accompanied by a constant-force mechanism, because uniform energy delivery is fundamental to maintaining the snap's precision throughout the power reserve.
Habring² has built much of its own identity around this complication: the A11S caliber adds seven components to the base movement, and the mechanism is visible from the caseback. Arnold & Son declined the concept with the DSTB — Dial Side True Beat — moving the mechanism to the dial side rather than hiding it on the back. Bell & Ross in the DB2517 Kind of Two GMT realized the drive wheel in 14k gold, an unusual constructive choice for a functional component.
The seconde foudrayante is a close but not identical relative: there too the hand advances in steps, but completes a full rotation in one second, marking fractions of a second — typically one sixth — not entire seconds. It is an indicator of high speed, not precision to the second.
An accessory function often paired with this is zero-reset: by pulling the crown, the hand returns instantly to zero to allow synchronization with the time signal. On quartz, the two-second jump of the Seiko V192 is instead a low battery warning: same gesture, opposite function.
