Seconds are the most revealing indicator of a movement: just watch how that hand moves to understand what's beneath the dial. A traditional mechanical movement beats at fractions of a second and the hand advances in regular ticks, whose frequency depends on the number of balance wheel oscillations. A Grand Seiko Spring Drive, instead, produces a perfectly smooth continuous rotation because regulation is entrusted to an electromagnetic brake, not a mechanical anchor. These two opposite visual responses tell stories of profoundly different architectures.
Seconds can be displayed in three main positions: at the center of the dial, in a subsidiary seconds counter at 6 o'clock (the so-called small seconds or sub-seconds), or in a regulator layout, where minutes occupy the center, hours are at 12 o'clock and seconds at 6 o'clock. This latter scheme, born from precision chronometers of the 18th century, allows separate and immediate reading of each indication, eliminating the visual overlap typical of the conventional dial. Some manufacturers call it semi-regulator when hours and seconds share the same subdial.
Deadbeat seconds is a mechanically more complex solution: an independent mechanism, often with its own separate mainspring, forces the hand to tick exactly once per second, imitating the behavior of John Arnold's marine chronometers. The Grönefeld One Hertz and Garrick S3 are recent examples; in the Arnold & Son Constant Force Tourbillon 11 the deadbeat hand is even shaped like an anchor enameled in blue, an explicit tribute to the mechanism's genealogy. Retrograde seconds, as in the Chronoswiss Pulse One, follow a linear arc instead: the hand advances for thirty seconds then instantly snaps back to the starting point, a behavior that requires a return spring system and a gear train geometry built specifically for this purpose.
Hacking seconds, that is, stopping the seconds hand by pulling out the crown, is today considered a minimum requirement on any watch oriented toward daily precision: it allows synchronizing the movement to the exact second without having to wait for the hands to pass. Technically it works by inserting a lever that touches the balance wheel or balance cock, locking its oscillation. Some conversions, such as Stowa's on the Unitas 6498-1 caliber, move the seconds originally at 6 o'clock toward the center of the dial, an operation that requires drilling the minute wheel, adding a transfer gear and mounting a supplementary bridge with its own jewel. It is not a trivial modification, and those who do it without proper knowledge risk compromising the gear mesh.
The shape of the seconds hand also has historical value: the transition from the straight hand with counterweight of the first Rolex Milgauss version to the lightning bolt-shaped hand of the 6541 became, over time, one of the most cited references in reading vintage variants.
