Glashütte ribbing — in German Glashütter Streifen, in English Glashütte ribbing or Glashütte stripes — is not a decoration applied afterwards: it is a finishing technique structurally integrated into Saxon watchmaking tradition, executed by hand-scraping on the movement plate. The result is a series of extremely fine and regular parallel grooves that create a depth effect and luminous variation impossible to achieve with mechanical milling.

The technique belongs to the so-called German School of Watchmaking, born in Glashütte in the late nineteenth century. In that school, finishing was not ornament: it was the way one demonstrated mastery of tools and hand control. Every mistake in a single groove forces you to redo the entire surface. For this reason, ribbing remains today one of the most direct markers for evaluating the finishing level of a German movement: you see it, but above all you recognize when it is done well.

In today's practice, we find it systematically on Nomos Glashütte, A. Lange & Söhne and Union Glashütte, among others. On the A. Lange & Söhne L152.1 caliber, ribbing appears on the three-quarter plate in German silver (Deutsches Silber), which is the nickel-copper-zinc alloy with warm champagne color historically used in Glashütte instead of French maillechort. In Nomos calibers — such as the Alpha or the caliber used in the Ludwig neomatik — ribbing appears both on the three-quarter plate and, often, on the rotor.

The combination ribbing + three-quarter plate + blued spherical-head screws + perlage on lower plates constitutes what Saxon watchmakers informally call the traditional finishing package. Not all four elements must be present simultaneously, but when they are, it is almost always a movement produced or finished in Glashütte.

A clarification I always make at the bench: Glashütte ribbing has different pitch and groove width compared to Genève stripes. Genève stripes have an oblique pattern relative to the component axis; Saxon ribbing is tendentially parallel to the long edges of the plate, with closer and less deep grooves. The difference is visible to the naked eye with a good loupe.
