The Nomos Swing System is the proprietary escapement developed by Nomos Glashütte over seven years of research and officially presented in 2014. Before that date, Nomos purchased escapements from external suppliers, with ETA leading the way: a common dependency among many mid-range German manufacturers, but incompatible with the in-house production ambitions the brand had pursued since reopening its Glashütte facilities in 1990.
The most visible element of the system is the balance spring tempered in blue, recognizable to the naked eye through the sapphire caseback. This is no mere ornament: the controlled temperature modifies the microstructure of the spiral and directly affects its elasticity, with concrete effects on the consistency of timekeeping. The chromatic signature thus becomes a technical indicator as much as an aesthetic one.
The system is mounted on several calibers from the house, including the DUW 3001 — the ultra-thin automatic movement used in Neomatik versions — and the DUW 6101. The term Neomatik, in Nomos nomenclature, designates in-house automatic movements with a silicon base, contrasted with manual-winding calibers such as the Alpha, which derives from Peseux architecture and does not mount the Swing System in its original version.
In terms of finishing, Nomos movements that house the proprietary escapement also carry the decorations typical of the Glashütte tradition: the parallel striping called Glashütte ribbing and the perlage on worked surfaces, on rhodium-plated plates. These are visible finishes, not hidden ones, consistent with the Bauhaus philosophy that guides the external design of the models: reduction to essentials, legibility of structure.
From the workbench, I add a precision that sources treat in a confused manner: some notes describe the Nomos Swing System as a «regulation system» or «regulator», others correctly as an «escapement». It is an anchor escapement — thus it includes anchor, escape wheel and balance spring-wheel — not merely a frequency regulation system. The distinction matters when evaluating the actual degree of vertical integration of the manufacture.
