The engraved text arrives crooked, the inscription on the edge is not vertical, and no watchmaker wants to loosen and retighten by hand until finding the right spot — often it doesn't exist with standard threads.
Omega has patented this closure system for screw-down casebacks that eliminates the problem at its root. The mechanism features a mechanically defined stop position: the caseback reaches proper tightness exactly when the engraving orientation is as intended. This is not a secondary aesthetic matter. On models like the Seamaster Diver 300M, the Planet Ocean 600M, or Speedmasters with animated sapphire casebacks, the water-resistance text, logos, and sculptural decorations must be vertical to contrast visually with the viewer. The Naiad Lock ensures they always are, regardless of the operator and the number of reopenings for servicing.
From a technical standpoint, the system does not sacrifice waterproofness to achieve alignment. On versions certified for 300 or 600 meters of depth, the perimeter gasket works correctly precisely because the caseback stops in the position of maximum contact, which coincides with the alignment position. The two requirements — seal and orientation — are solved in the same mechanical instant.
On the bench, I've seen Omega Naiad Lock casebacks opened and closed dozens of times without ever losing the stop position: the mechanical reference holds up over time.
