In watchmaking, "indicator" is not a synonym for hand: it is any moving element — hand, disc, bezel, sphere, arc — that conveys readable information on the wrist. The distinction matters because the indicator's form changes the very nature of the reading.
The power reserve indicator is perhaps the most articulated case. In its most common version it is a hand that travels across a graduated arc; but radically different solutions exist. Ressence has patented a system with bicoloured ceramic microspheres: light spheres emerge while dark ones retract, and reading occurs through chromatic contrast, not angular position. The conical mechanism, inspired by historical pocket watches, solves the same problem in three dimensions. The indicator modelled on the Leica shutter shows a white portion that grows from the centre as the barrel winds. In all these cases the physical principle is the same — the state of the mainspring — but the visual decoding is completely different.
It is worth distinguishing between linear and non-linear indicators. In the linear version the hand advances at constant speed regardless of spring state; in the non-linear version it progressively slows as energy is depleted, reflecting the mainspring's actual behaviour. The latter is technically more honest, but harder to construct.
Seconds indicators have also taken different paths. The rotating disc — sometimes called a running indicator — completes one revolution in sixty seconds and is often used as a decorative element as well. The jumping dead-seconds, found for example on certain De Bethune calibres, steps once per escapement beat: an indicator that reveals the movement's frequency directly. The tenths-of-a-second counter, driven directly by the 5 Hz escapement, rotates completely every ten seconds and makes visible a temporal resolution that the traditional hand cannot communicate.
There are also non-time-related state indicators: the torque indicator shows residual energy directly from the barrel; the GPS reception indicator signals the interruption of automatic synchronization; the diamond set between the lugs of the Patek Philippe ref. 5236P indicates the platinum case. Three functions, three visual languages, one single principle: the indicator is a translator. It translates an internal state — mechanical, electronic, material — into something that can be read without opening the caseback.
