In watchmaking, the term «time zone» doesn't just refer to a geographic area: it designates a family of mechanical complications with fundamentally different design logics, and confusing them is costly both at purchase and at the service bench.
The most important distinction is between GMT traveller and GMT office. In the first case, the hour hand moves in one-hour increments without stopping the other hands: the watch physically follows the new local zone. In the second — also called caller GMT — the hour hand remains fixed on home time, while an independent 24-hour hand is manually positioned to the second zone to consult. These are opposing philosophies: the traveller relocates home, the caller carries home with it.
The GMT hand on the Rolex GMT-Master I belonged to the first conceptual generation: it was linked to the hour train, so adjusting local time also moved the GMT hand. Modern caller movements — like the Sellita SW330-2 or the caliber used in the MING 37.11 — have severed this mechanical connection, making the 24-hour hand autonomous.
A 24-hour rotating bezel is an instrumental alternative: it transforms a standard three-hand watch into an approximate GMT without modifying the movement. A fixed bezel graduated in 24 hours, like the one on the Tudor Black Bay Pro, forgoes adjustment in exchange for immediate readability and protection against accidental displacement. The so-called city bezel, with city names instead of numbers, translates time zones into geographic references and approaches the worldtimer conceptually.
A true worldtimer is a higher-order complication: two or three concentric rings simultaneously display the time in 24 world cities. In the Nomos Club Sport Neomatik, each press of the pusher at 2 o'clock advances one zone; in the Ming 29.01, reading occurs through intersection between the local hand and the city ring. These are mechanisms requiring precise adjustments and, at the bench, solid knowledge of the sequence of detents.
On the electronic front, GPS Solar movements — like the Seiko 5X83 caliber — determine the time zone directly from satellites, updating without manual intervention. Accuracy is on the order of ±15 seconds per month even without continuous signal. I have no direct experience regulating these calibers: mechanical intervention makes no sense, and troubleshooting remains in the software domain.
A practical note: the «flyer» disc — present for example in the Miyota 9075, with 24 compartments and a colored indicator — uses no central hand but a rotating sector beneath the dial. More immediate reading, but less precise to the minute. At the bench it should be treated like a disc calendar, not as a conventional indicator.
