In watchmaking, digital does not necessarily mean electronic. It means the time is indicated by discrete digits — numbers that jump, prisms that rotate, discs that snap — instead of hands that move continuously. The distinction is as old as the Cartier Tank à Guichet of the 1930s, where two windows displayed hours and minutes in numerical form through a purely mechanical mechanism. The term describes a method of reading, not a power source technology.

On the mechanical front, digital display demands precise engineering solutions. The central problem is energy: making a digit jump requires a concentrated burst of force in fractions of a second. In the A. Lange & Söhne Zeitwerk, a patented vertical clutch governs the synchronized jump of hours and tens of minutes; without that mechanism, the balance wheel would miss beats at the moment of change. In jump-minute watches like the Derby Swissonic, a spring accumulates tension for 60 seconds and releases it all at the moment of the jump — a simple system, but one requiring tight tolerances in the concentric plastic drums that display the digits. URWERK pushes the concept to the extreme with the satellites of the UR-120 and the triangular prisms of the UR-112: in sapphire crystal cylinders, the prisms engraved with numbers rotate around a central differential that converts horizontal motion into vertical motion. The result is a digital display driven by a mechanical movement without any electronic component.

Electronic digital has a parallel history. Twisted Nematic LCD, developed by Brown Boveri between 1969 and 1973, made quartz digital watches of the 1970s possible: up to eight digits on a flat screen, powered by batteries. BBC ceded the technology to the Japanese because mass production costs were unsustainable in Europe — a decision that shifted the entire market. Decades later, LCD technology coexists with OLED in hybrid displays: the Hamilton PSR MTX uses both on the same dial, with the OLED emitting its own light and producing bright green numbers without backlighting.

The ana-digi format — analog hands plus LCD display on the same dial — was born in the 1980s and survives in Casio G-Shock and Citizen Promaster Aqualand. In some of these, the two time indications are not synchronized and must be adjusted separately: a direct consequence of cohabitation between two independently conceived systems. In the Casio G-STEEL GST-B500D, the hands can physically move off-dial on command to free up the reading of the sub-digital displays beneath — a mechanical solution to the readability problem in a hybrid watch.

From the bench I see that the most common confusion is between digital and electronic. A Lange Zeitwerk is digital and mechanical. A G-Shock is digital and electronic. A Tank à Guichet is digital, mechanical, and a century old. The method of reading and the source of energy are two independent variables.
