Côtes de Genève

Côtes de Genève are the most widespread decorative finishing in haute horlogerie: wavy parallel lines engraved on the plate and bridges of a movement, with a rounded profile that captures and refracts light in a characteristic way. At the workbench you recognize them instantly: they are not simple linear scratches like brushing, but grooves with a soft belly that creates an almost textile effect, shimmering as you tilt the piece.

Traditional execution takes place on a horizontal lathe with a calibrated abrasive stone, advancing by a constant pitch with each pass. The pitch determines the width of the ridges: tighter pitch means more refined, but slower to execute. When the pattern is linear on flat surfaces the work is already demanding; when it becomes radial — the so-called radiating or fan-shaped Côtes de Genève — each line must converge toward a point and the technician must reorient the piece with each pass. On miniaturized calibers this requires a control that is difficult by hand and mechanically non-trivial.

I often read descriptions that confuse Côtes de Genève with sunray brushing or with snailing. Sunray brushing is a surface finish obtained by centrifugal rotation, without depth; snailing — which some people improperly call concentric Côtes de Genève — is instead a spiral snail pattern typically used on balance wheel pinions and on the fusée. These are three distinct things, even though they can coexist on the same caliber: the Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 978, for example, accumulates ten different finishes on the same plate.

Côtes de Genève have no functional effect on the movement: they do not reduce friction, do not improve lubrication, do not lower the thermal coefficient. The only marginally cited practical function — reducing annoying reflections during microscope inspection — is real but secondary. Their value is as a signal: they indicate that someone has dedicated unnecessarily time to a component that the majority of wearers will never see.

They must be distinguished from the Poinçon de Genève, the cantonal certification mark that includes them as a requirement but goes far beyond: it requires timing tests, at least eleven finishing criteria verified by a third-party office and, most importantly, that the movement be assembled in the canton of Geneva. Côtes de Genève are found on watches produced anywhere; the Poinçon de Genève is not.

In the 1980s, when I worked with vintage Swiss calibers, the Côtes were almost always manual and irregular enough to know that there was a hand behind them. Today many manufactures execute them with high-precision CNC machines: technically perfect, aesthetically identical, but without that slight rhythmic imperfection that still tells me something.
