The minute track is the scale printed, engraved, or applied along the perimeter of the dial that allows me to read minutes with precision. It is not decoration: it is a tool. Its presence or absence, its density, and its design radically change how the minute hand behaves during reading.
The most cited variant in literature is the railroad minute track. The name comes from the chronometers of American railroad workers in the late nineteenth century, instruments that had to enable instantaneous and unambiguous readings. The classic design alternates long and short markers arranged in two concentric rows, evoking railroad tracks. This structure is not purely aesthetic: the two levels of markers create an immediate visual hierarchy, distinguishing five minutes from individual minutes without needing to read numbers. From the workbench, I have seen that period counterfeits often fail precisely here, flattening the hierarchy or spacing the markers equally.
Legibility is the reason why the railroad track migrated from pocket watches to field watches, pilot watches, and marine chronometers. In the so-called Type B layout, adopted by certain aviation watches, the minute track occupies the outer band of the dial and is dimensionally dominant compared to the hour scale, which is moved inward. A functional choice born in the cockpit: in flight, you read the minute first, then the hour.
There are constructive variations that alter the character of the marking. Some dials print the track flat. Others engrave it creating a micro-relief. The Biver Automatique brought attention to a technique borrowed from numismatics, the reverse struck, where the track appears recessed as if it had been minted in negative: the three-dimensional effect is real, not an ink trick. On sectorial dials—where hours, minutes, and seconds run on separate tracks rather than concentric ones—the minute track becomes even more central because it does not share the visual field with overlapping hour indices.
The material and color of the track directly influence nighttime legibility. When the track is filled with luminescent material—Super-LumiNova in almost all recent cases—reading minutes in darkness becomes independent of the luminous index on the hand. On white dials over dark backgrounds, as in certain pilot watches from the Sixties-Seventies, the beige luminescent track was the only visible reference after a few minutes of total darkness.
