The Swing System is the lever escapement developed in-house by Nomos Glashütte, and it is the component that technically distinguishes this manufacture from nearly all other mid-range German watchmakers. This is not an aesthetic revisiting: it is an escapement project conceived, calculated, and produced in Glashütte, with an aluminum-niobium hairspring tinted blue. That hairspring is not decorative — the color is the result of heat treatment that modifies its elastic properties.
The system is present in all modern calibers from the house, from the manual Alpha to the Neomatik automatic versions like the DUW 3001 and DUW 3202. The DUW 3001 beats at 21,600 bph, with 43 hours of power reserve; the DUW 3202 raises the frequency to 28,800 vph, maintains 42 hours of reserve, and adds button-operated time zone adjustment. Both mount the Swing System with a balance wheel regulated in six positions — a practice from chronometers, not mass-produced watches.
Technically, the Swing System is a variant of the classic Swiss lever escapement, not a radically different architecture. The point is not the originality of the physical principle: it is that Nomos produces every critical component internally, including the hairspring. Before 2005, almost all Glashütte manufacturers — including Nomos — purchased escapements from external suppliers, mainly ETA or Nivarox. The Swing System closes that debt of dependency.
Through the sapphire caseback, the finishing of the balance bridge is recognizable: alternating Côtes de Genève and perlage, screws with blue-burnished heads, three-quarter plate according to Saxon tradition. That three-quarter structure is a precise constructive element — not ornamentation — because it increases frame rigidity and reduces deformations under thermal stress.
The term Neomatik, which appears in the commercial name of many models, simply identifies the automatic winding version of the caliber, with integrated rotor. It does not change the nature of the underlying Swing System. Similarly, the Update indication — a perimetral ring that displays all 31 days with two red markers framing the current date — is a separate, patented mechanism that is added to the caliber without modifying the escapement architecture.
At the bench, I have disassembled a few DUW 3001s: the tolerances are good, the regulation is solid. I do not have third-party certified comparative data on chronometric performance under real conditions, so I stop there on that point.
