Sistema di visualizzazione orbitale

Ressence is not a brand: it is a technical solution that became a brand. At the heart of everything is the ROCS — Ressence Orbital Convex System — a patented display module that eliminates traditional central hands and replaces them with biaxial eccentric satellites orbiting around the main axis of the dial while rotating on themselves. The result is that each indication — hours, minutes, seconds, day of the week — occupies its own zone but constantly moves relative to the others, changing the visual geometry of the dial throughout the day.

The module is physically separate from the underlying movement. Motion is transmitted magnetically, not through direct mechanical coupling: this allows the upper chamber to be hermetically sealed and filled with oil. The oil eliminates reflections on the sapphire crystal, reduces optical distortion, and creates that nearly flat effect — paper-flat, as Ressence calls it — that no anti-reflective coating on dry glass can replicate. Oil-filled models feature seven internal bellows, filled with air or gas, that expand and contract to compensate for oil volume variations between −5 °C and +55 °C. A free air bubble would be simpler, but the bellows control the phenomenon precisely.

The base movement — in the most common versions an ETA 2892-A2 or a deeply modified 2824/2 — drives the ROCS through the minute hand axis. The number of components in the module alone varies by generation: the ROCS 1.3, with 27 gears on a single convex plane, is the most compact version; later versions add ruby ball bearings to reduce long-term friction, especially in oil-free models like the ROCS 8.

The e-Crown system, introduced on the Type 2, adds an electronic layer over this mechanical structure. Photovoltaic cells beneath the dial power logic that detects whether the watch is on the wrist or resting: in the latter case it stops the balance wheel to preserve battery reserve, and upon returning to the wrist a double tap on the crystal re-synchronizes the display. A Bluetooth module handles a second time zone via app. Benoît Mintiens, the founder, admitted that when introduced the system was misunderstood by the traditional industry. From the bench I understand: the mechanical crown invented in 1842 is still the gesture most enthusiasts consider indispensable.

The RCLS — Ressence Compression Lock System — is the charging and adjustment system integrated into the caseback of models without an external crown, such as the Type 5. All charging and setting operations are performed from the back, keeping the case profile clean.

I am not familiar with the assembly tolerances of the magnetic module or the long-term thermal drift data of the oil: this is information that Ressence has never made public in exhaustive detail.
