Ressence is not a brand: it is a system of thought applied to time reading. The ROCS — Ressence Orbital Convex System — is the patented display module by Benoît Mintiens that replaces traditional central hands with biaxial eccentric satellites that rotate on themselves and around the central axis of the dial in an orbital manner. The result is time reading by relative position of the discs, not by the angle of a hand.
The module is mechanically separated from the base calibre — often an ETA 2824-2 or 2892-A derivative — via magnetic transmission. This allows the upper chamber to be hermetically filled with special oil without the fluid contacting the movement. The oil eliminates reflections on the sapphire crystal, reduces optical distortions, and produces that almost flat effect — paper-flat, as they call it — that makes the dial readable like a screen. It is not a secondary aesthetic effect: it is the technical reason for the oil.
Temperature variations between approximately -5 °C and +55 °C modify the oil's volume. Ressence solves this with seven internal bellows filled with air or inert gas, which expand and contract in compensation. A free air bubble would be insufficient and visually unacceptable on a dial of this type.
The number of components in the ROCS module varies by version: the 1.3 variant mounts 27 gears on a single convex plane to indicate hours, minutes, seconds, and day of the week; other versions reach 107 total components. The ROCS 9 tilts the dial at 9.75° to improve readability on the wrist. Each version is numbered and differs both in the indications it handles and in materials — Grade 5 titanium in the Type 3 EE, for example.
The e-Crown, introduced on the Type 2, adds an intelligent layer without touching the ROCS mechanics: it detects whether the watch is being worn, stops the movement when stationary to conserve power reserve, and resumes time with a double tap on the crystal. Power comes from photovoltaic cells under the dial; Bluetooth manages a second time zone via app. The system integrates 87 mechanical and electronic components. On the Type 5, where no traditional crown exists, charging and adjustment occur from the case back via the RCLS — Ressence Compression Lock System.
From the bench: the oil-filled dial changes appearance with light. Backlit, it appears almost illuminated. Those who don't expect it mistake it for a digital display. It is completely mechanical.
