Skeletonization is a subtractive technique: material is removed from the mainplate and bridges until only the structural skeleton remains, making the gears, escapement, and complications visible through the front crystal or caseback. It is not added ornament, it is material taken away. The distinction that really matters at the bench is between skeletonized and open-worked: in the first case the dial is removed or nonexistent and the movement is completely transparent; in the second the dial remains but is perforated, leaving windows onto the mechanical parts beneath. These are related but not identical concepts, and many use them as synonyms only to argue with an expert later.
The work can be mechanical or manual. Manual work, combined with engraving, requires hours that today are measured in man-days: each bridge shaped by hand bears marks that a CNC mill does not leave. The visual result changes, but so does the structure: removing metal from the mainplate reduces rigidity and imposes precise choices about where to cut without compromising the dimensional stability of the jewels and arbors. Poorly executed work costs you in gear drift.
There are intermediate degrees. Semi-skeletonization opens partial windows onto the movement while preserving dial readability. A dial with open-worked elements and stamped flanges or applied indices falls into this category. Complete skeletonization, instead, forces you to solve the readability problem in other ways: indices on the crystal, hands treated with luminescent material, or simply the acceptance that the watch is not quick to read.
On the back side, the sapphire crystal caseback—called an exhibition caseback—is the natural complement to skeletonization, but it is not its cause: a full movement can have a sapphire caseback, and a skeletonized movement can have a closed caseback. The micro-rotor and peripheral rotor exist in part to not obstruct the view of the movement from the caseback, but this is a design consequence, not the definition of skeletonization.
A point that those who sell vintage watches know well: the term squelette in French has a long history, at least from the eighteenth century, and was originally a luxury complication reserved for display pieces. Today skeletonization is found at every price point, even on ETA or Sellita movements modified by third parties. The quality of the cut and finishing of the edges—chamfers, anglage, polishing—is what separates serious work from something aesthetically similar but executed without care.
