The pulsometric scale does not measure time: it measures the body. It is a graduation printed on the dial or engraved on the bezel that converts a partial count of heartbeats into a frequency expressed in bpm, beats per minute. The principle is simple but requires precise calibration: instead of waiting a full minute, the doctor counts a fixed number of pulses — 15, 30 or, more rarely, 10 — starts the chronograph, stops the hand at the last beat and reads the value directly on the scale. The mathematics is already built into the graduation design.
The counting base changes from watch to watch, and it is not a secondary detail. A scale calibrated for 15 beats responds faster, useful in emergency situations; one calibrated for 30 is more accurate because it averages over a longer interval. The Angelus Instrument de Mesures uses 15 beats, the Beaufort Pulsatimer uses 30, the Vulcain Monopusher covers a range from 40 to 200 bpm. These differences reflect different intended uses: clinical, emergency room, sports medicine.
Historically the pulsometric scale was born as a professional tool. The term doctor's watch is not a marketing gimmick: in the middle decades of the twentieth century the chronograph with pulsometric scale was a real diagnostic instrument, worn on the wrist by internists and cardiologists before electronic instruments became portable and accessible. Breitling, Omega, Angelus and Vulcain all produced references designed for this use.
The bezel variant is less common but it exists: Omega's Speedmaster Pulsations carries the scale on the bezel insert, with text on the left side and numerals on the right. It is not just an aesthetic solution: it frees the dial from an additional graduation and makes reading more immediate in difficult lighting conditions.
Today the pulsometric scale has almost disappeared from current production. Its functional place has been taken by the electronic heart rate monitor. However, it remains a reliable indicator for dating a vintage piece and understanding the original use it was intended for: when I find a 1950s chronograph with this scale, I already know it was not designed for motor racing.
