The column wheel is not a luxury optional component: it is the correct way to make a chronograph. It is a toothed cylinder with a stepped profile — the columns, precisely — that rotates one notch every time a button is pressed, and in each position controls the state of the levers beneath it: open or closed clutches, hammering at rest or in operation, counters running or stopped. Start, stop, reset: three states, three angular positions, a geometry that never lies.

The historical alternative is the eccentric cam system, which performs the same task but with less precise geometry in the transition from one state to another. At the bench you hear the difference: a chronograph with a column wheel has a crisp, almost dry response to the button, with a small perceptible click. One with a cam often has a vaguer return, and over the years tends to accumulate play. It is not an aesthetic matter — it is functional.

In split-seconds chronographs, the complexity doubles. Angelus's A150 caliber uses two distinct column wheels: one governs the main start-and-stop mechanism, the other manages exclusively the release of the rattrapante. Each wheel does one thing, and does it well. This separation of functions is the right path when many levers are involved and margins for error must be minimal.

The column wheel is also found outside the classic chronograph context. In certain automaton modules — the Magic Lotus is a documented example — a button integrated into the crown starts and stops the animation through a column wheel that works exactly like in a chronograph: same principle, different application. The mechanism does not know it is on an automaton rather than on a rattrapante.

From a restoration perspective, the column wheel is one of the few components that is rarely replaced: if it is intact, it almost always lasts longer than the rest of the movement. The teeth of the columns wear less than the tips of the levers resting on them. When a vintage chronograph arrives at the bench with imprecise response, the first place I look is at the tips of the command levers, not the wheel. The wheel is usually still good.
