Geneva stripes — Côtes de Genève in French — are one of the oldest and most recognizable decorations in haute horlogerie: parallel lines obtained through controlled abrasion on movement plates and bridges. This is not a secondary ornament. Anyone who executes them properly knows that each pass of the tool must overlap the previous one by half, otherwise the result is a disaster. I have seen poorly finished plates where the stripes looked like crooked stitches: there the decoration becomes evidence against whoever made it.
The traditional technique uses a lathe with an abrasive pad that runs in a straight line, leaving a band that appears opaque or lustrous depending on the viewing angle. The effect is to capture light in a different way with each movement of the wrist, animating the movement without exaggerating it. Some maisons apply Geneva stripes at 45° to the movement axis, as in the MSE 311.00 calibers, to maximize contrast with adjacent satin-finished surfaces. Others, like Chronoswiss, arrange them radially on the bridge. There is no single correct configuration: there is a configuration coherent with the aesthetic project of the caliber.
The term must be distinguished from circular finishing, sometimes called circular Geneva stripes or confused with perlage: perlage creates overlapping circles, while classic Geneva stripes run in straight lines. These are two different tools, two different results, two different readings of light. Confusing them is a common error even in some specialized magazines.
The Poinçon de Genève — also known as the Hallmark of Geneva — is a distinct official certification: a third party verifies that the movement was developed and assembled in Geneva, that it meets precise technical criteria, and that the finishing — including Geneva stripes, beveling, screw polishing — reaches the required standard. Not every movement with Geneva stripes bears the Poinçon; and not every certified movement limits itself to classic stripes. Vacheron Constantin developed the côte unique, a variant with much finer lines that continue from one plate to another without interruption — a project that required over five hundred hours of refinement. David Candaux interpreted the same tradition with Côtes du Solliat: wider and more spaced stripes, legible even at a glance. Glashütte uses a similar technique, often improperly called Geneva stripes even in German literature, but produced with tools and angles characteristic of Saxon tradition.
On commercial significance: Geneva stripes indicate that someone has dedicated time to finishing surfaces that are not visible when the watch is closed. This time costs. When stripes are present on a low-priced movement, it is worth asking whether they were executed by hand or produced mechanically with approximate results.
