Palladium belongs to the platinum group metals and in watchmaking almost always plays a hidden structural role: it enters alloys as a stabilizer, not as a facade metal. This is the point that distinguishes its use from that of platinum or gold, with which it often coexists in the same composition.
Chemically, palladium resists oxidation better than traditional white gold (which is whitened with rhodium, a coating that wears away) and does not develop unwanted color patinas. This is why Omega inserts it into almost all its proprietary alloys: in Moonshine Gold it partially replaces copper, lowering the color temperature toward a pale yellow; in Sedna Gold — rose gold with over 20% copper — just over 1% is enough to slow the progressive yellowing that copper triggers over time; in Bronze Gold (9K grade, 37.5% gold) palladium works together with gold to block the verdigris that makes classic bronze incompatible with prolonged skin contact.
Breguet uses a proprietary formula of 18K gold with silver, copper and palladium to achieve a warm, slightly blonde tonality, close to eighteenth-century golds. Audemars Piguet has taken a different path: in Sand Gold it replaces silver with copper and palladium, producing 18K gold with a neutral color between white and rose; in the proprietary Bulk Metallic Glass (BMG) alloy, palladium rises above 50% of total weight. Rapidly cooled, this alloy does not crystallize: it maintains an amorphous structure that gives it a persistent mirror polish and scratch resistance superior to conventional steels. AP uses it on the bezel, caseback frame and central bracelet links of the titanium Royal Oak, where it creates a direct contrast with satin surfaces.
Czapek, with the Secret Alloy 401 developed by Metalem, combines gold, platinum, palladium and silver for a dial that must withstand guillochage without losing definition at the pattern edges. De Bethune uses steel and palladium discs for its patented lunar phases, with a variation of one day every 122 years. Palladium also appears in grade 23 titanium (Ti-0.3Pd), where a small addition improves corrosion resistance compared to grade 5 without altering its lightness.
Pure, palladium has also been used as an electroplated coating on dials, where it produces cold and uniform reflections. On the workbench I have seen few watches with solid palladium cases: the metal is less dense than platinum, which might seem an advantage, but cost and machining difficulty have always limited its use as a primary material. Those who seek it as a protagonist rarely find it.
