In watchmaking, the link is the constructive unit of the metal bracelet: every element that connects to the next, whether hollow or solid, rigid or articulated, determines the mechanical behavior and visual character of the entire bracelet. It is not a secondary aesthetic detail — it is the load-bearing structure.
Links are first divided by internal construction. Hollow links, bent cold or hot, are the most common solution because they reduce weight and cost. Solid links — indicated by the abbreviation SEL, Solid End Links, when referring to terminal links in contact with the case — increase overall solidity and resistance to deformation over time. On a vintage Oyster bracelet, the difference between a hollow terminal link and a SEL is felt immediately by the fingers and seen after years of use.
The external profile of the link changes everything. The rouleaux profile — cylindrical, continuous — gives a rounded line typical of certain dressy bracelets from the Seventies and Eighties. Flat or domed links generate a completely different visual effect, more solid and contemporary. Half-links, links reduced to half length, are not a makeshift solution: on bracelets with deployant clasps lacking micro-adjustments, they represent the only way to achieve a precise fit without adding or removing entire elements.
A separate category is the Milanese link, also called Milanese mesh: not a series of rigid elements connected together, but a continuous mesh of interwoven wire forming a flexible and breathable structure. The origin is Milanese in name but the technique spread throughout Europe in the late nineteenth century. Its main quality is the uniform distribution of tension on the wrist, which guarantees comfort even during long days without micro-adjustments. This same property — distributed tension, reduced weight, immediate adjustment — made the expandable steel mesh link the reference for aviation bracelets and extreme operational applications, including the space environment where the JB Champion became the so-called NASA bracelet.
From my workbench, I add that the quality of a link is evaluated by holding the bracelet between thumb and index finger and bending it laterally: well-crafted links move without squeaking and without irregular play. Asymmetrical play betrays defective tolerances in the pins or connecting plates — a problem that no surface finish can hide over the long term.
