Pure 24-carat gold is too soft to withstand daily use: every watchmaking house working with gold has always known this. Alloying is a technical necessity, not an aesthetic compromise. 18-carat — 750 thousandths pure gold — has been the industry standard for decades: the remaining 25% determines color, hardness, and behavior over time. Copper and silver shift toward warm yellow or rose; palladium lightens toward white. So far, basic chemistry.

The problem emerges with sports use: a case in classic 18K gold scratches visibly after just a few weeks. From this limitation arise, starting in the 2000s, proprietary patented alloys. Hublot launches Magic Gold in 2011, the world's first scratch-resistant 18K gold: hardness comes from ceramics infiltrated into the gold matrix, with a slightly greenish tint that distinguishes it to the naked eye. The brand's subsequent King Gold has a reddish tone instead, closer to a traditional 5N but with superior color stability. IWC responds with Armor Gold, modified microstructure to increase surface resistance without altering the carat composition. A. Lange & Söhne develops Honey Gold in 2010, patented and with secret formula: amber color, unusual hardness for a watchmaking gold.

On the chromatic front, Omega builds an entire family: Sedna Gold is a rose with palladium that stabilizes color over time; Moonshine Gold, introduced in 2019, adds silver, copper and palladium to yellow gold obtaining a pale tone inspired by moonlight, with high fade resistance; Bronze Gold contains only 37.5% gold (9K fineness) with palladium and silver, develops a slow patina without the verdigris of classic bronze. Rolex works on two fronts: Everose is the answer to unstable rose gold over time; Jubilee Gold, used in the Day-Date, aims for a more subtle tone mixing yellow, gray and rose tones in an 18K alloy produced entirely in-house.

At movement level, 5N treatment — electroplating based on almost pure gold — is used to coat mainplates and bridges, giving that amber warmth that distinguishes high-end calibers. The screwable gold chatons of Mühle Glashütte movements are a different case: there gold is chosen for its tribological hardness in pivot supports, not for aesthetics. As for gold PVD, it is Physical Vapor Deposition on steel: thin layer, uniform color, but not comparable to a solid alloy case either in mass or wear behavior. The two things should not be confused.
