In watchmaking, hand indicates the hand: the mobile component that points to a graduated scale to display hours, minutes, seconds, or any other function. It is not a decorative element added on top of the mechanism, but an integral part of the reading system and, in many cases, of the complication itself.
Shape has direct technical consequences. A baton hand, straight and rectangular, is easily produced and legible, which is why it has survived in production calibers. The spade hand, wide and tapered, requires more material and more finishing time. The observatoire-style hand, typical of precision watches from the late nineteenth century, has a specific geometry designed to facilitate millimetric reading on the dial: it is not an aesthetic choice, it is metrological heritage. At the bench, when I mount this type of hand on a period restoration, I immediately feel if the pinion-cannon has the right friction: a long hand amplifies any imprecision.
In GMT complications the hand becomes the point where the entire caliber architecture is decided. A caller GMT — as in the Doxa Sub 250T GMT — uses a 24-hour hand mounted centrally, locked to the main mechanism: you read a second time zone, but you cannot shift the local hour without stopping everything. The quick-set hour hand, instead, advances in hour jumps independently from the minute hand: the GMT becomes usable for those who change time zones every week. The difference is not one of style, it is one of mechanical hierarchy. The Rolex ref. 1655 is a case that still creates confusion: the 24-hour arrow hand simply follows the standard hour hand on a fixed scale — it is a day/night indicator, not a true GMT system.
On the finishing front, hand chamfering means manual beveling of the hand edges: each edge is brought to a precise angle with a file or chisel, then polished. It is an operation that is not visible in photographs but is visible under a microscope, and it distinguishes a piece finished at the bench from one that came out of the mold. The inner angled bevels — angled bevels inside the plates — follow the same logic: sharp angles on concave surfaces, impossible to execute mechanically without losing control of the geometry.
MeisterSinger's single-hand display is the extreme opposite of complexity: one hand only, a dial with markers every five minutes. It works because approximate hourly reading is sufficient for many contexts. It is a coherent design choice, not a lazy simplification.
