Glashütte

Glashütte is not a brand: it is a city in Saxony, south of Dresden, which since 1845 has been the centre of German haute horlogerie. That year Ferdinand Adolph Lange opened the first manufacture there, trained local apprentices, and imposed a construction standard that still defines an entire school today. The term «Glashütte», when it appears on a case back or technical specification, indicates a precise set of structural solutions and decorative finishes, not simply a geographical origin.

The three-quarter plate is the most recognizable signature. Lange introduced it in 1864: a single plate made of maillechort — an alloy of copper, nickel and zinc, called Neusilber or argentan in German — that covers approximately three-quarters of the movement surface, leaving only the barrel visible. The choice is not originally aesthetic: a continuous plate offers greater rigidity and reduces play between components. Subsequent manufactures, from A. Lange & Söhne to Glashütte Original, from Nomos to Mühle and Tutima, have adopted variants of this geometry — two-thirds, three-quarters, with their own asymmetries — while maintaining maillechort as the reference material for its dimensional stability and workability.

On the plates and bridges appears the most identifiable decoration of the Saxon school: Glashütte striations, in German Glashütter Streifenschliff. These are extremely fine parallel grooves, hand-engraved with an abrasive tool on previously finished surfaces. The result is an optical pattern that captures light uniformly and directionally, different from both côtes de Genève — which runs diagonally to the movement axis — and circular perlage. On the flat surfaces of the plates, sunbeam finishing is sometimes used: radial lines radiating from a central point, found among others in Nomos calibres of the DUW series.

Among the mechanical solutions typical of the Saxon tradition are the swan-neck regulator — a curved spring that locks the balance regulation screw with superior precision and repeatability compared to a simple friction register — and the flying tourbillon, invented in 1920 by Professor Alfred Helwig at the Glashütte School of Watchmaking: the cage is supported only from below, without an upper bridge, making the rotation visible on both sides. The woodpecker-neck regulator is a variant developed by Mühle Glashütte with its own geometry.

«Saxon finishing» also includes hand-applied anglage on plate edges, screws with burnished heads or mirror-polished heads, and pressure-set gold chatons for rubies in high-end movements, such as in A. Lange & Söhne's L155.1 calibre. From the bench I learned that the difference between hand-executed Glashütte finishing and mechanically reproduced finishing is visible under magnification: the pitch between grooves is never perfectly constant in manual work, and precisely that slight irregularity is the sign that the work is authentic.
