In watchmaking, display refers to the system through which a caliber communicates information to the wearer. It is not synonymous with dial: the dial is the physical support, the display is the reading logic. The distinction matters because two watches with the same dial can have radically different displays.
The most widespread system remains that of hands on a circular scale, but consolidated alternatives have existed for at least a century. The montre à guichet — watch with windows — shows hours and minutes through apertures in the dial over rotating discs underneath: the Cartier Tank à Guichets is the historical reference, but the principle is found in contemporary pieces like the Neo Frame Jumping Hour, where the windows are in black sapphire. Jumping hours are part of this family: the hours do not flow but jump instantaneously, a mechanism requiring carefully calibrated energy accumulation and rapid release — if the jump is slow or noisy, there is a problem in the train.
Rotating disc displays without hands take the logic even further. Ressence with its ROCS (Orbital Convex System) replaces hands with eccentric satellites orbiting the convex surface of the dial, driven by the minute axis of an automatic caliber. Trilobe inverts the traditional concept: the discs rotate, the indicator is fixed. MB&F on the HM8 uses refracting sapphire prisms to invert and project legible numbers from two discs. These are different approaches to the same problem: making time legible without classical pointers.
The regulator display separates hours, minutes, and seconds into independent registers on different axes — historically born to reduce reading errors in precision calibers, today used for aesthetic reasons as well. The retrograde display scrolls the indication over an arc before snapping it back to the beginning; the bi-retrograde variant applies the same principle to two symmetrical indications.
On the caseback, the sapphire crystal case back — called display case back or open caseback — allows observation of the movement. It adds a few tenths of a millimeter to the thickness and, on watches not originally conceived with this solution, can reduce water resistance if the gasket is not suitable. On vintage pieces, it is the first point to check after a replacement.
Power reserve displays deserve a separate mention: the non-linear indicator on Oris's Calibre 113 reads remaining reserve with greater precision at low charge levels, where a classical linear indicator is less reliable. It is a real technical detail, not a decorative one.
