The degradé on a dial is not merely a decorative flourish: it's a technical choice that alters how we perceive depth on a flat surface. The transition can run from center to edges, edges to center, or follow a vertical or diagonal axis. Direction is never neutral: a dial lighter at the center and darker at the margins draws the eye toward the hour markers, while the inverse—dark center, lighter edges—creates an effect of expansion toward the crystal.
From an execution standpoint, hand-sprayed lacquer is the most widespread technique: color is deposited in successive passes, modulating brush or airbrush pressure and distance. This manual work explains why two dials of the same reference are never identical down to the millimeter. H. Moser & Cie built an entire family of dials around this principle—called internally fumé—where gradation is achieved on smoked glass or galvanically treated metal. Moser's fumé is the most studied case, but the technique is common across manufacturers, from sports watches to living-room chronographs.
Degradé can be applied to various substrates: lacquer on brass, galvanic treatment on copper, enamel, mother-of-pearl, semi-transparent acrylic. On mother-of-pearl, the result depends also on how the shell is cut relative to the light source, adding a variable that no industrial formula fully controls. On semi-transparent acrylic, the gradient can reveal the movement beneath progressively, not uniformly.
Degradé combines well with other surface finishes: sandblast, satin, sunburst. Degradé combined with sandblast creates a surface that absorbs light unevenly—the roughness of the blast scatters, the darker color absorbs—producing a textural effect difficult to achieve with a single process. Sunburst, centered on the dial axis, amplifies the color gradation because it adds radial light variation on top of the chromatic one.
One detail I often see overlooked: degradé responds differently to artificial and natural light. Under LED the gradient can appear flatter; under raking late-afternoon light, even the subtlest gradations become readable. Anyone buying a degradé dial without seeing it under varying light conditions is buying only part of what they've purchased.
