The column wheel is not an aesthetic luxury: it is the mechanical brain of the chronograph. It is a toothed cylinder, grooved with alternating columns, that rotates in steps and distributes commands to the start, stop, and reset levers. Each button press advances the column by one tooth, changing which surface is active — the solid top of the column or the empty space between two columns — and thus which lever is raised or lowered. The result is a rigorously ordered, repeatable, mechanically honest start-stop-reset sequence.
The difference from the eccentric cam system is real, not marketing. A cam chronograph uses a shaped plate that directly moves the levers: it works, costs less to manufacture and assemble, but the action is less uniform across multiple cycles and button pressure is irregular. The column distributes the command symmetrically: each click feels the same, and as wear occurs the geometry degrades more slowly. On the wrist, you perceive it: a button with a column has a sharp, short click, while a cam has more travel and a vague sense of variable resistance.
The number of columns varies. The Valjoux 88 has nine, visible to the naked eye on the back. Typical values are five, six, eight. More columns means more steps per full rotation, therefore finer commands — particularly relevant in rattrapantes, where the column must manage an additional quarter cycle for the second hand. In Moser's MB 16.31 rattrapante there are two distinct columns: one for the main chronograph, one for the split function.
The column wheel is found outside chronographs too. In the Armin Strom Orbit Purple it pilots the on-demand date display mechanism. It is the same logic: a component that marks discrete states, one at a time, in a defined sequence. Wherever multiple levers need to be coordinated with a single command, the column wheel is the cleanest solution.
In some movements — Hublot Unico, Roger Dubuis Excalibur skeletonized — the column is deliberately displayed on the dial side. It has a recognizable geometry and tells by itself how the mechanism works: I have nothing against transparency, as long as the component is there to work, not just to be watched. In the Rolex 4131 caliber of the Daytona and the Tudor MT5813, the column is integrated with a vertical clutch, which eliminates the jump of the running seconds hand at startup — a detail that makes a difference in work chronographs.
