Bioceramic is not ceramic in the technical sense of the term: it's a proprietary composite developed internally by Swatch, introduced in 2021 with the MoonSwatch collection, which combines ceramic powders, bio-sourced raw materials, and pigments in a polymeric matrix. The result is a hybrid material, closer to a filled plastic than to a true sintered ceramic like the one used by Rolex, Patek Philippe, or Omega itself on other models.
From the bench, the difference is felt immediately. Bioceramic is noticeably lighter than steel and lacks the dull sound of a monolithic ceramic: a nail tap returns a more plastic tone. It's not a flaw—it's the nature of the material. The construction advantage is real: it allows colorations that would be impossible or prohibitive in steel or traditional ceramic, it allows reproducing the asymmetric case of the Speedmaster Professional with a level of surface detail remarkable for the price, and it lends itself to matte and satin finishes without the brushing steps that metal would require.
Swatch produces the material in its own Swiss facilities, which explains both the control over color—each MoonSwatch reference has a tint developed ad hoc—and the ability to realize complex geometries like the step dial, which in steel would require expensive CNC machining. Bioceramic also makes possible the radial subdials introduced on the 2024 Mission on Earth models, inspired by the typography of the Speedmaster Project Alaska II and III NASA.
A clarification I feel compelled to make: notes from some sources attribute the material to an Omega–Swatch collaboration. From a technical standpoint, Bioceramic is a Swatch Group patent; Omega does not use it on its own calibers or cases outside of this project. Anyone seeking information on the detailed production process—percentage composition of ceramic powders, sintering temperature, or final surface treatment—will find that Swatch has never made those data public.
