Battito (Beat Rate)

The beat is the number of complete oscillations that the balance wheel performs in one hour: each oscillation generates two escapement clicks, and these clicks — audible as the characteristic tick-tock — define the movement's cadence. The measurement is expressed in vibrations per hour (vph) or in Hertz: 18,000 vph correspond to 2.5 Hz, 21,600 to 3 Hz, 28,800 to 4 Hz, 36,000 to 5 Hz.

At the workbench, I learned to distinguish movements with my eyes closed. A low-beat at 18,000 vph — like the 14.2 mm balance wheel of Moritz Grossmann's Perpetual Calendar, or the original caliber of the Big Pilot 5002 — has a slow, solemn rhythm, typical of the Glashütte tradition and postwar Swiss classical watchmaking. A high-beat at 36,000 vph sounds tighter, almost anxious. High frequency allows finer regulation of the rate and makes the sweep of the seconds hand noticeably more fluid, but brings two concrete trade-offs: greater energy consumption, with reduced power reserve, and accelerated wear of escapement components, requiring more frequent maintenance intervals.

There is no universally superior frequency. It depends on the design. Seiko transformed the 5740-8000 caliber from 2.5 Hz to 5 Hz as a laboratory experiment: it worked, but the compromise on power reserve was evident. Vacheron Constantin addressed the problem more radically with the Twin Beat system, introduced in 2019 after four years of development: two independent oscillators and two separate gear trains allow switching between Active mode at 5 Hz — for daily use — and Storage mode at 1.2 Hz, lowering consumption to the point of extending the reserve from four days to sixty-five, while keeping the perpetual calendar synchronized. It is the most articulate engineering solution I know for managing the conflict between precision and autonomy.

The concept of beat also manifests in less linear forms. The dead-beat second — or dead seconds — does not change the balance wheel's frequency, but interposes a mechanism that transforms continuous motion into discrete one-second ticks: Arnold & Son calls it True Beat Seconds and displays it entirely on the dial in the DSTB model (Dial Side True Beat); De Bethune patented its own version in 2011. Equally different is the use of the term heart beat, with which some manufacturers — Frederique Constant in particular — indicate an opening on the dial that lets you see the balance wheel oscillating: it is not a technical parameter of the beat, but a way of making it visible.

When I regulate a movement, the first thing I check is whether the beat error — the imbalance between the two half-oscillations — is within an acceptable value. High beat error is not felt, but it is measured, and compromises precision even on an otherwise well-regulated caliber.
