Aventurina

Aventurine exists in two distinct forms, and confusing them is the most common mistake I hear even from people who have been selling watches for years. One is an artificial glass, the other is a natural mineral from the quartz family: they are not the same thing, they are not worked in the same way, they do not behave the same way under the cutting tool.

Aventurine glass — also called goldstone or, in German usage, goldfluss — was born in Murano in the seventeenth century. Legend has it that it was an accident: a glassmaker introduced molten copper into the glass bath and obtained a material full of sparkles. The name is said to derive from the Italian a ventura, by chance. The metallic particles suspended in the glass — copper in the amber variant, oxides of other metals in the dark blue and dark green variants — are what generate the optical effect. This phenomenon has a precise name: aventurescence. It is not surface lustre; it is light that returns from within, changes with the viewing angle, moves as the wrist moves. From the workbench I note that dark blue is by far the most used variant in watchmaking because it evokes a night sky; we already had it in watch dials in the eighties, but today it is worked with precisions that were then impossible.

Natural aventurine is translucent quartz with lamellar inclusions of mica or fuchsite that produce a similar but less dense and more irregular sparkle. Green is the most common colour; natural blue is rare. Rolex presented at Watches and Wonders 2026 a natural aventurine green dial for the Day-Date 40: milky hue, visible inclusions, each piece different from the other.

In processing, aventurine glass poses structural problems that natural stone further amplifies: it is fragile, does not withstand vibrations, flakes at the edges if the cutter is not diamond-tipped and cooling is not controlled. Bremont cuts its dials with diamond cutters and then mounts them on a reinforcing metal plate. Lebois & Co works in double layer — 0.40 mm plus 0.35 mm on a brass base — to obtain the recessed counters of the chronograph without compromising structural integrity. Breguet, in the Tourbillon Sidéral 7255, developed a technique they call Grand Feu aventurine: the glass is pulverized, applied in five layers on a gold support and fired at approximately 800 °C between one layer and the next. The result is a blue dial that maintains its density over time without fading like certain traditional enamels.

Aventurine as a backdrop for skeletonized movements works because the contrast is sharp: the polished metal bridges emerge against a background that absorbs light instead of reflecting it all in one direction. Felipe Pikullik in the Mondphase II uses it exactly this way — aventurine glass becomes the three-dimensional base on which wheels and indicators float. It is a technical choice before it is an aesthetic one.
