Spring bars Rolex Day-Date 18038 yellow gold — 20mm
€14,95
Set of two spring bars for Rolex Day-Date reference 18038 in 18-karat yellow gold, in hardened Swiss Standard steel. Size: 20mm between the lugs. Pin diameter: 1.8mm. For the entire 18038 production, from 1979 to 1989 — the first Day-Date with a quickset case and 3055 movement.
The 18038 has drilled-through lugs, even in the earliest production. 1.8mm pin — not the modern 1.5mm and not the vintage 2.0mm. It is a compromise chosen by Rolex for the gold cases of the late Seventies: 18k gold is soft, a hole that is too wide deforms under load. The 1.8mm holds better in the seat without becoming oval.
When I work on an alligator strap for a client’s 18038, these are the spring bars I fit. The correct specification for the gold case.

Domande Frequenti
Are these spring bars compatible only with the 18038 or do they work on other gold Day-Date models?
18038 only, from 1979 to 1989. Later references (18238, 18248) have different lugs and 1.9mm pins. If you have another non-original 18038 it might accept the 1.8mm, but don’t assume: measure the lug cavity before investing. The 1.8mm is specific to this period.
Why 1.8mm diameter and not the standard 1.5mm or 2.0mm?
Rolex chose 1.8mm as a compromise for 18k gold, which is soft. A vintage 2.0mm pin would have deformed and ovalized the cavity, while 1.5mm would have been too fragile under the weight of the gold bracelet. The 1.8mm seats just right without wearing the cavity prematurely.
If I install these spring bars with a non-original Rolex strap, do I risk damaging the watch?
No, the risk is to the strap. If your strap lugs aren’t calibrated for the 1.8mm (too wide or ovalized cavities), the pin slips and the strap falls off. Always verify the cavity is precise before mounting: test the pin by hand, it should enter with light resistance.
How long do these spring bars last? When should they be replaced?
It depends on usage and how often you clean the watch. Usually they last 5-10 years if you don’t expose the metal to continuous acidic sweat. When the pin starts entering the cavity too easily or you see black oxidation, it’s time. I replace them every time I work with a new strap: it costs little and saves you the headache.
