Set of two spring bars for modern Datejust 31, in hardened Swiss Standard steel. Size: 16mm between the lugs. Pin diameter: 1.5mm. Covers the current generation 278240, 278271, 278274 (and the versions with gem-set bezel 278384RBR, 278383RBR) and the previous 178240, 178271, 178274.
This measurement is not from any catalogue: I took it myself, with a caliper, on a 278 that passed through the atelier. Sixteen millimetres exactly between the lugs, closed lug hole. It is the middle size no one expects — not the 13 of the vintage Lady, not the 17 of the vintage gold 31s — and those who order by eye usually get it wrong right here.

How do I know if these are the right spring bars for my Datejust 31?
Sixteen millimetres between the lugs, closed end. They cover the 278240, 278271, 278274, the gem-set bezel versions 278384RBR and 278383RBR, and the previous generation 178240, 178271, 178274. I measured it myself, with callipers, on a 278 that came through the workshop.
What diameter are the pins?
1.5mm, compression fit. Standard size for this case, no adjustment needed.
How many spring bars are in the pack?
Two. The full set needed to fit a strap.
Do I need to replace them every time I fit a new strap?
Yes, it's best to use a new spring bar with every change. On a 31mm case any play is immediately noticeable, and a bar that's already been used won't hold as well as a new one.
Why sixteen millimetres and not another size?
It's the in-between size people don't expect. Not the 13mm of the vintage Lady, not the 17mm of the vintage gold 31mm models. Anyone ordering by eye usually gets this measurement wrong.
