Set of two spring bars for Rolex Day-Date reference 18038 in 18-karat yellow gold, in hardened Swiss Standard steel. Size: 20mm between the lugs. Pin diameter: 1.8mm. For the entire 18038 production, from 1979 to 1989 — the first Day-Date with a quickset case and 3055 movement.
The 18038 has drilled-through lugs, even in the earliest production. 1.8mm pin — not the modern 1.5mm and not the vintage 2.0mm. It is a compromise chosen by Rolex for the gold cases of the late Seventies: 18k gold is soft, a hole that is too wide deforms under load. The 1.8mm holds better in the seat without becoming oval.

Are these spring bars suitable for my gold Day-Date?
If it is a reference 18038, yes. 20mm lug width, 1.8mm pins: this is the specification for that case, produced from 1979 to 1989.
Why is the pin 1.8mm and not the standard I see on other straps?
The 18038 has solid 18-karat gold lugs. Gold is soft: a 2.0mm pin, as on vintage pieces, risks distorting the hole, while a modern 1.5mm pin works too loosely. Rolex chose 1.8mm specifically for this case.
What material are they made of?
Hardened Swiss Standard steel. The lugs are gold, but the spring bars remain steel: they hold tension without marking the housing.
How many spring bars do I receive?
A set of two. I always fit them this way when working on a strap for an 18038 at the bench.
Do they also work on other gold Day-Date models with different lugs?
No. This size and this pin are specific to the 18038. If you have a different reference, bring me the watch and I will check before recommending the correct spring bars.
