Funzione flyback

The flyback is not a more complicated chronograph: it's a chronograph with one fewer step. On a traditional chronograph, starting a new measurement requires three gestures — stop, reset, restart. The flyback compresses them into one: a single press returns the hand to zero and sends it running again immediately. The mechanism was born in the Thirties, developed for military aviation, and conceptually hasn't moved since.

I've seen many versions on the bench. The substance doesn't change, but the quality of execution does. The return of the hand must be instantaneous and clean — what the French call retour en vol. If the hand hesitates, trembles, or stops midway before snapping back, something is wrong with the leverage or the return spring. It's one of the simplest tests for assessing the construction quality of a chronograph.

The operational reason is concrete. A pilot measuring consecutive route segments can't afford to use both hands for three separate operations; his thumb is enough. The same applies to any situation where time won't wait and your hands are occupied. It's not mechanical whimsy: it's ergonomics applied to a complication.

The flyback differs from the rattrapante, which less experienced customers often confuse it with. The rattrapante — also called split-seconds — allows you to measure intermediate times while keeping the chronograph running: you stop an overlaid hand, read the partial, then let it catch up with the main one. These are different functions, they respond to different needs, and the movements that perform them have almost nothing in common.

It's worth remembering that the flyback adds complexity to the chronograph train and requires precise calibration of when the reset mechanism engages relative to the restart. In less successful calibers, the flyback can introduce a slight reading error at the very moment of return. In well-executed calibers, this margin is imperceptible. It's one of those details you only see when taking it apart, or by watching the hand very carefully during repeated operation.
